Heavy water is a deuterium oxide - D2O and the normal water is - H2O. Deuterium is an natural isotope of hydrogen having 1 proton and 1 neutron; the hydrogen nucleus has only 1 proton. This difference is very important, heavy water has different physical, chemical and physiological properties compared with the normal water.
