Like all animals, gray wolves have far too many adaptations to list them all. Even something as simple as blood's ability to clot is an adaptation. However, some unique adaptations of wolves include:

  1. Keen senses. They have an excellent sense of smell, great hearing, and good vision, even at night, all of which help them to locate prey and threats.
  2. Wolves live in packs, which makes them more effective hunters. They can also work together to protect each other and their cubs from enemies, such as bears and mountain lions.
  3. Wolves that live in cold climates, such as Canada and Alaska, have thick coats to stay warm. Additionally, they can decrease blood flow to the skin and thus heat loss during cold conditions. The pads on the bottom of each foot often come in contact with snow. During such conditions, the footpads are kept just a little warmer than the point where they would freeze, preventing frostbite but not causing the wolf to lose valuable heat to the snow.
  4. Wolves are fast runners. Unlike most animals, wolves are good endurance runners, too, and are able to chase prey rapidly for up to 20 minutes. This allows them to hunt by running their prey to exhaustion.

It means how the gray wolf may have adapted to certain areas to survive.(red wolf, tundra wolf) Like how they adapted to hunt smaller prey, in the time of the dire wolves, so therfore they survived. When the dire wolves mistorisly died out, but most think because they did not adapt to hunt smaller prey (like their gray wolf cousins) when the larger prey ran out.
They have sharp teeth and thick fur so they can be deadly but warm
eating habits
They adapt in forests and in the wilderness. They like open spaces and hunting. Keeping one hostage in a house is a bad idea because they will most likely turn on you.

Structural Adaptations

The gray wolf has many adaptations that help it survive. One of the gray wolf's structural adaptations is its teeth and claws, its teeth and claws helps it too hunt and kill its prey in a short time. Another structural adaptations is its fur. Their coasts are made up of wooly fur to provide insulation and its large paws have fleshy pads and claws for traction and can spread to provide better support in the snow.

Behavioural Adaptations

Wolves howl for a variety of reasons, including family bonding, hunting, and communicating with wolves outside the pack. Although all wolves will howl in the same key, each wolf has his or her own specific voice. Wolves will typically join in when a single wolf starts howling. Wolves howl in different pitches and the pitch of each wolf’s howl starts low and rises as the howl continues, creating an illusion that the pack is larger than it really is.

Even though the gray wolf has a simple stomach, it is large enough to store as much as 20 lbs of food. This helps the animal go without food for extended periods of time, which may at times extend to a period of two weeks.
