Usually, the effects of pesticides like DDT on human health depend on the exposure level. As we are using these chemicals for pest control at a much higher level than earlier, so the possibility of human exposure and their side effects on human health also increases exponentially. High exposure to DDT can cause reproductive and developmental issues along with other harmful diseases.

If you are an insect, it kills you,
If you are a bird, you probably got it from eating a contaminated insect. Your eggs may be so thin your offspring does not survive.
If you are a human, you probably got it from eating contaminated vegetables or an animal who ate contaminated vegetables. It's very concentrated at this point. You can get all kinds of poisoning from acute toxicity to Asthma, Diabetes, reproductive abnormalities, cancer.

DDT was a pesticide which is now banned from use, because if an animal is exposed to enough of it, it is toxic and kills that animal. However, its effects are not usually direct. Usually, a small amount is absorbed by (e.g.) a fish in a nearby river. It doesn't necessarily kill that fish, but perhaps a bird will eat 50 fish and take in a much larger amount. Then a large bird may eat 50 of the smaller birds, taking in a huge amount of DDT and dying.

It also weakened the egg shells of several bird species, meaning that when their mothers sat on them to incubate them, the eggs broke and the chicks died.
