Since every film is an entrepreneurial enterprise, job definitions are less well-defined than they might be in a more fully structured operation, such as a bureaucracy.

You can read more, below, about the different tasks generally attributed to the different producer labels. In real life, on a film set -- or at any time during the project's life, however, tasks may be performed by whomever is 'available' or 'skilled' to complete the job required.

A film producer is someone who hires the production crew such as directors, writers, production designers. Once the film is funded, the producers can bring the crew together to create the film.

An executive producer is someone who has much harder work to do. They are the one's in charge of funding the film and paying for production. They are also responsible for any problems that arise during filming (i.e. directors sick, the writer has broke his arm, the actors are on strike). The executive producer is the overall manager of the entire project and assumes most responsibility for the film's success.
