Some of the risks of genetically engineering plants are:

* The crops may not be safe to eat in the long term * GM crops may cross breed with wild plants and release there genes into the wild with unpredictable results. * There would be less variation in the plant's genes, and if there are any faulty genes in the plants, disease among the plants would be more common. Some risks of genetically engineering animals are:

* Animal products could be unsafe * The well being of the animal could be affected---e.g. if the animal was modified to produce more meat it would be fatter and wouldn't be able to move around * Something could go wrong and harm the animals. Some of the risks of genetically engineering humans are:

* Something could go wrong and harm the person * Some people may realize they can decide how they want their unborn baby to look and abuse the power of genetic engineering by creating 'designer babies'.

As with any scientific procedure, genetic engineering poses a number of significant risks.

The most common concerns are potentially adverse reactions to the consumption of genetically modified animals and products, the possibility of drug-resistant gene markers used in vectors being transferred and therefore producing drug-resistant viruses, and in the case of xenotransplantation, the fear of infection in those who receive animal organs.

Additionally, opponents fear that while genetically modifying one gene may be successful, it may potentially disable another gene or the mechanism which regulates another gene.

Genetic engineering is a highly controversial subject. We can't really be sure whether it is a good or bad thing. According to the past trend, genetic engineered products tend to be cheaper than the originals, as genetically engineering the crop basically increases the yield. There are many health concerns tho. Some studies show that genetic engineered foods cause cancer, while others say they are harmless. The most important question we must ask ourselves is do we really know what we are doing? and do we trust these corporations?

There have been major issues with companies like Monsanto, who have gone as far as bribing government officials to pass their products as safe when they very well knew it was harmful.

Genetic engineering changes the genes in the organism. Cancer is change of genes in our body that hasn't gone right. There is a connection between genetic engineering and cancer, but it has not been researched enough to say it is "proven".
