None really. You can't make any problem worse as long as you go to a properly trained practitioner (CMIR registered in the UK). The only thing is that it might not be as effective as you hoped and you've spent a bit of money. I've found it really helpful.

The biggest danger of acupuncture is the practitioner. If somebody is not careful they can puncture a lung, the stomach cavity or other organs/nerves. To avoid this, find someone that is licensed through your state. As far as acupuncture treatments go, again it is what points an acupunturist uses. Acupuncture itself is not harmful.
