There are no "best" dorms. Each residence hall caters to a specific type of person. For example, Alumni Court North and South are both what I would consider "typical college dorms;" The ones you see in movies, etc.
Queens Court is the oldest residence hall, therefore it's the most gothic/elegant. It has the biggest dorm rooms, but no central cooling. It is also the hardest residence hall to get into. Applicants need to write an essay to get in and have to sign a contract saying that alcohol, drugs and other contraband are not to be brought into dorm rooms. Since you seem interested in QC, I must tell you that the RA's are extremely anal about the "No Contraband" rule, and random checks are carried out quite often. However, if you are a straight student, QC is the perfect choice.
Tierney is the newest residence hall, therefore has the latest amenities. The dorm rooms are quite small, however. Also, it is a mixed environment: it is both a freshman dorm and an upper-class men dorm. One more thing is that all Tierney residents are enrolled in a program called the Manresa Program. It is basically a 0 credit course that is meant to bring out the humanitarian part of you.
Hughes Hall is basically the party place on campus. It is an all-quad residence hall. Almost nobody lists it as their first choice, yet it houses the most freshmen.
Hope I could be of some assistance. :)
