Middle school ages range from 11-14, high school ages range from 14-18 and college ages range from 18-21+.
*Remember that a student can skip grades, or some schools may be different (some middle schools are just 7th and 8th grade).
Middle school varies, because in some places, 6th grade is the first year of middle school, but in other areas, 6th is still elementary school and middle school starts in 7th grade. There are even some places that have 5th grade as the first year of middle school. 8th grade is usually the final year of middle school though. So, the age ranges for middle school can be 10-14, 11-14, or 12-14, depending on what grade starts middle school.
High school is usually grades 9 to 12, so that is ages 14-18.
It can vary in different school districts, because there can be different configuarations of grades.
But most commonly, elementary school has kindergarten, and then grades 1-5. Then grades 6-8 are in middle school and 9-12 are in high school. So in this case, ages 5-11 are in elementary school, 11-14 are in middle school, and 14-18 are in high school. But in some school districts, elementary goes up to 6th grade and middle school is only grades 7 and 8. Then there are a few places that still have junior high (rather than middle school) for grades 7-9 and only grades 10-12 in high school (this was traditionally the way we had it set up, but it's pretty uncommon nowadays). And I have even heard of some places where elementary is only grades K-4 and grades 5-8 are all in middle school. So again, it can vary, but the first one I listed is the most common and standard way to do it these days.
Middle school and high school last for 3 years each ( 12 to 15 and 15 to 18).
After completing grade 12, roughly 18 years old. High School (10th-12th grade in Japan) is not compulsory, but most students do attend.
