Circumcision is done for several reasons, although the only real advantage (long and short term) would be hygiene. When circumcised, it's easier to keep the penis clean, since there is no foreskin to have to clean under.
Some do it for aesthetic reasons, feeling the penis looks better without the foreskin.
There are also religions that require circumcision on a male, such as the Jewish faith. The circumcision is performed by the Rabbi when the baby is still only a few days old.
