Computerisation of retail has been a massive plus over the years. The development of EPOS and EFTPOS systems have allowed customers enormous freedom to purchase whilst not carrying cash (debit/credit card systems). It has also made the ordering of date sensitive food products more efficient and allows for mush less waste.

The introduction of ICT across the retail sector is reducing staff requirements - this is particularly noticeable in warehousing. Because stack management has become more efficient then less staff are required to handle goods. Automated warehousing systems have taken over manual tasks - stock counting has been more automated to counting by excepting systems again labour reduction. The introduction of the self scan till systems means 1 operator can now manage 4 tills reducing staff by 3 each time

On the sales floor you have cash registers. Those are computerised these days. They are programmed to know how much each and every item on stock costs, how to do the math, how to do coupons, etc. Also on the sales floor there's hand readers that will tell the price of various items and when stockers stock something they put in how many of the item they put on the shelf after scanning it into the reader.

In the stock room they use the hand readers to do inventory as it comes in off the trucks. They also have a computer in back that they use to print the price tags and do their invetory counts of the whole store room on a monthly basis.
