Catholic AnswerBelow are the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are spread out all through the Scriptures, the Corporal Works of Mercy (saving the last one - that of almsgiving are all contained starting at St. Matthew 23:31, when Our Blessed Lord describes how we are going to be judged. To give alms to the poor is listed in many other places in The Bible, so should be with the list. The Corporal Works of Mercy are physical actions one can do that show God's mercy. The Catechism says specifically that works of mercy are required from every single person to put off completely the "old man" and to put on the "new man". This is covered under the punishments of sin in paragraphs 1472-1473:

1473 The forgiveness of sin and resoration of communion with God entail the remission of the eternal punishment of sin, but temporal punishment of sin remains. While patiently bearing sufferings and trials of all kinds and, when the day comes, serenely facing death, the Christian must strive to accept this temporal punishment of sin as a grace. He should strive by works of mercy and charity, as well as by prayer and the various practices of penance, [emphasis added] to put off completely the "old man" and to put on the "new man." (Eph 4:22, 24)

The Spiritual Works of Mercy

To admonish the sinner,

To instruct the ignorant,

To counsel the doubtful,

To comfort the sorrowful,

To bear wrongs patiently,

To forgive all injuries,

To pray for the living and the dead.

The Corporal Works of Mercy

Matt 25:31

To feed the hungry,

To give drink to the thirsty,

To clothe the naked,

To visit the prisoners,

To shelter the homeless

To visit the sick,

To bury the dead

To give alms to the poor.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Corporal Works of Mercy are based on Jesus' description of the last judgment; in other words, this is how we are going to be judged. This is described in the 25th chapter of St. Matthew's Gospel. Most lists include an 8th: to give alms to the poor. The final (eighth) one is not included in the list in Matt 25.

The Corporal Works of Mercy

Matt 25:31-

To feed the hungry,

To give drink to the thirsty,

To clothe the naked,

To visit the prisoners,

To shelter the homeless

To visit the sick,

To bury the dead

To give alms to the poor.

Information on the corporal works of mercy and examples of how you can see them at work in the world today?

Catholic AnswerThe Corporal Works of Mercy are listed in St. Matthew 25:31-46 when Our Blessed Lord is describing the Last Judgment; in other words, this is how we are going to be judged! There is another Corporal Work of Mercy, not listed with the others, it is found throughout Scripture and the Church always lists it with the others: to give alms to the poor, to make eight. Below are the original seven found in St. Matthew, I would think that most Churches have a ministry to cover each of these, and any Christian trying to lead a good life and follow Our Blessed Lord should be involved in at least some of them on a regular basis. Please talk to your pastor or local youth leader to see what is being done in your parish about doing these:Feed the hungryGive drink to the thirstyWelcome the strangerClothe the nakedVisit the sickVisit the prisonerBury the dead.
