The greatest challenge that most teachers will face is finding full time employment after graduation. In Ohio for example it typically takes 2-3 years of working as substitute before finding a full time position.
This is for several reasons:
1) Teaching is viewed as a calling to many and the chance to teach young people and shape society is very rewarding and therefore popular. Teachers are held in special regard as are Dr.s, veterans, members of the clergy, etc.
2) Teachers have an excellent schedule usually working just over 180 working days a year. They typically work M-F, 7-4, have summers and weekends off. This is very appealing to large numbers of college bound students looking for a major.
3) States in recent years have been cutting budgets and reducing the number of positions. Due to the down turn in the economy, many teachers who may have otherwise retired are still on the job. This means fewer available jobs.
Another challenge that a teacher may face is relatively low pay for someone with a bachelors degree. An engineering graduate for example can expect to earn around 60k out of college while a teacher may only earn 30.
Teachers also face the daily challenge of dealing with students who receive little home training, parenting, care or love. These conditions can manifest themselves in numerous ways which can be complex to deal with. Teachers must essentially deal with all of the issues that young people in society may involve themselves in; Drugs, sex, violence, etc.
