In another sense, that is a category of lawyer used in the English system (not in America). There they have two types of lawyers called solicitors and barristers. The barristers are the lawyers who actually try the cases in court while the solicitors are the ones who have office and clients (like the American lawyers). The solicitors usually engage the barristers to try the cases. There are lawyers in the US whose specilty is trying cases, an they will enter into agreements with other lawyers to actually try the cases. Sometimes they are referred to as barristers as well, but it is not a specific category in the US system.
