Immigrants came because there was cheaper, faster and better transportation available to them. The Jewish came because of the Russian persecution of them. Also, America was nicknamed the "golden land" so that lured a bunch of immigrants. Railroad companies and steamship companies also wanted more workers and customers so they would woo potential immigrants by having friends and relatives send letters describing how wonderful it was.

What happened to immigration from Northern Europe after 1880?

Are you referring to Immigration to the US? The only period of time where immigration was dominated by Northern Europe was the mid-1800s. So after this time period (around 1880), the number of immigrants from Northern Europe dropped in percentage (not necessarily numbers as they were being overshadowed by other groups now). However, immigration from Northern Europe, and all of Europe mostly, to the US has decreased dramatically and is being wildly overshadowed by other ethnicities coming mainly from Latin America or the Far East.
