If we are sending a file in one go and if some error occurred in between the file transfer then the complete file has to be resend which wastes the bandwidth so to prevent this, the file to send is divided in to smaller unit which we call packet, and then send packets 1 by one so that if a packet is lost then we need to send only that particular packet not the complete file.

∙ 15y agoI have never heard of a computer component called a 'packet' As far as I am aware a packet refers to when your modem sends data to another computer: it breaks the data (Say an email) into smaller pieces called into 'packets'. It then sends these packets to the other computer (The recipient of the email). The other computers modem then reassembles the packets and bingo the email program announces that an email has been received.
