Mandolins are decendants of the lute, whilst they are tuned like a violin (G,D,A,E) but are held and strummed like a guitar. Mandolins are traditionally acoustic, but recently electric models have been around. They come in a variety of styles, including those in the link below. They make a very distictive and rather nice sound- type in mandolin on YouTube for a taster
