Western Sahara is piece of territory that was previously a Spanish colony (1) in northwest Africa (2) with Sunni Islam as its predominant religion (3). In 1975, international pressure forced Spain to leave, but no indigenous movement had developed to resist the Spanish leading to a power vacuum which Morocco filled (4). In the 1980s, the indigenous Sahrouis formed the Polisario Front and, with Algerian support, tried to eject the Moroccan presence. A UN-sponsored ceasefire in 1991 has effectively left Morocco in control of the territory. Currently the territory is not self-sufficient and requires numerous imports from Morocco proper to function (5). Additionally, large numbers of Sahrouis live in refugee camps in Polisario-controlled territory or Algeria (6).
