This is my opinion. The iconoclastic contention was the first and loudest excuse, but the difference in language between Greek-speaking Christians and Latin-speaking Christians was one cause.
Another was the political difference between the Byzantine Empire and the Frankish kingdoms.
Both sides wanted to use God and Christianity to enforce their tyranny, and each tried to outshout the other with claiming primacy and historical privilege.
Cultural differences between Greeks and Germanic people certainly contributed as did the historical perspective. The eastern part of the empire had a written history that goes back to Herodotus, but the western half of the empire has no written history to speak of before Caesar. Although the Franks, Visigoths and Vandals tried to usurp the history and literature of Rome, they really only became literate people when they invaded and conquered parts of the Roman Empire.
The pressure of Arab conquest of large areas of the Byzantine Empire beginning with Syria and Egypt and finally extending to most of Anatolia caused the Byzantine diplomacy and relations with the Germanic kingdoms to be pretty schizophrenic.
The fourth Crusade didn't help, either.
AnswerEven from the days of the apostle Paul, Rome seems to have been an important centre of Christianity. In the fourth century, Emperor Constantine made the himself, and his successors, the de facto leader of the Christian Church, with the bishop of Rome as one of the five Metropolitans, or senior bishops of the Church. The loss to Christianity of Carthage in northern Africa, and the Great Schism of 1054, left the bishop of Rome, known in the West as the pope, as the supreme leader of the Catholic Church.
