This book is about an orphane girl named Katherine Tyler,

Setting: 1687-1688, Puritan settlement of

Wethersfield in the Connecticut Colony.

Protagonist: Kit Tyler, an orphan, who has fled

from a sheltered life in Barbados to find refuge with

her family in Connecticut.

Conflicts: The novel's main conflicts include Kit's

internal conflict between her love for the relaxed,

exotic setting of Barbados and her dislike of bleak,

repressive New England; an external conflict

between the Quaker woman and the Puritan settlers

who accuse her (and later Kit) of witchcraft;

an external conflict between the settlers who favor

freedom from the English crown and the Royalists

who maintain allegiance to King James.

Resolution: Kit finds true love and a new life

with Nat; the Quaker woman is rescued and

Kit is found innocent of witchcraft; the settlers

keep their charter, which preserves their

independence.

Themes: People will struggle and suffer for freedom.

Gripped by mass hysteria, people can turn into

a mob and persecute someone perceived as different.

Of Special Note: Meticulously researched historical

Katherine Tyler (a.k.a. Kit) moves from a sunny island with palm trees all over and turquoise water to nasty ugly grat water in Wethersfield Connecticut. It's not what kit has expected. She goes on the dolphin with John Holbrook and nat eaton. When she arrives she stays at her aunt Rachel's house and uncle Matthew woods house. She meets her 2 cousins for the first time, mercy and Judith who doesn't really enjoy having kit stay for the rest of her life. That's when kit meets Judith's crush William ashby. Also that's where mercy and Judith meet kits crush John Holbrook. As kit explores Connecticut she come across a witch Hannah tupper. She is very nice to kit but not to the townspeople. Little prudence gets taught by kit and then the townspeople think kit is a witch for hanging out with Hannah. Kit gets rid of her fancy dresses when William and Judith get married also John and mercy. Then nag gets a new ship an names it after kit. They become boyfriend and girlfriend and hopefully get married.
