1. Veterinarians are trained to treat all common domestic species. In the United States, the major species are dogs, cats, horses, cattle and pigs; sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, a wide variety of birds, rodents (rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, etc.), ferrets, snakes and some reptiles are considered minor species and are covered less extensively.

2. Although veterinarians are trained to the same degree as human medical doctors, they often make a quarter of an MD's salary or less.

3. Not all veterinarians treat animals - there are researchers, pathologists, public health specialists, epidemiologists and regulatory veterinarians as well.

4.Approximately 80 percent of admitted students in veterinary schools are female. 5. The word veterinarian comes from the Latin veterinae meaning "working animals". 6. Veterinarians were in the fore-front in the effort to suppress malaria and yellow fever in the United States. 7. 61-68 percent of veterinarians will suffer an animal-related injury resulting in hospitalization or significant loss of work during their career.

you often have to put animals down and you cant take all the rescues home, unfortunatly.

But their is a silver lining to every cloud!

you can travelle around the world going to congresses and exhibitions.

when you have saved your first life their will never be a better feeling!

You will find the perfect pet.

This is a very broad question, so I will cover the highlights of a typical veterinarian.

A veterinarian is a medical professional who is trained and licensed to practice medicine on animals ranging from horses and cattle to cats and dogs to snakes, Spiders, fish and gerbils. They are responsible for examining, diagnosing, treating and caring for these animals when presented to them for medical evaluation. Veterinarians perform surgery, clean kennels, order medications and counsel clients. They are often the managers or owners of clinics, and as such have business and human resources responsibilities as well.

In the United States, the educational requirements to become a veterinarian are steep: at least three years of undergraduate college and an additional four years of study at vet school. In the United States the degree for a veterinarian is DVM or VMD depending upon which of the 28 schools of veterinary medicine you graduate from. In addition to the college study, you must also pass the NAVLE (National Board Exam), and possibly a state exam as well to get a license. In 2011, the average student debt for graduates from vet school was ~$156,000; the average salary for a first year veterinarian was ~$60,000. The educational debt load is currently a major topic of discussion and may be initiating a crisis among vet students and new veterinarians.

Some veterinarians choose to further their education and do an internship and/or residency program. Once a veterinarian completes a residency program, he/she is allowed to sit for the relevant specialty Board exam. Once they pass this, they are board-certified in that area. Specialties include surgery, ophthalmology, oncology, dermatology, equine internal medicine, food animal, and preventive medicine.

Study a lot in high school and college, get EXCELLENT grades. Emphasize sciences and especially life sciences. Get all the practical hands on life experiences possible working with animals. Learn to write and communicate effectively. After 2-6 years of college apply to vet school after taking the GRE or MCAT test. If your application, grades and scores are high enough you may be given an interview at a school. If you score well enough on your interview(s) you may be offered a slot in that schools program. Then study for the next 4 to 6 years. After graduation take your board exam, and if you pass you will be licesed to practice as a veterinarian. It is harder to get into and pass most vet school programs than just about ANY human med program in the USA!

Veterinarians as a whole have one of the lowest default rate on loans - less than 2%.

Veterinary medicine was originally developed to handle outbreaks of disease in livestock. The first school of veterinary medicine was tasked with stopping an outbreak of rinderpest in France within the first five years of being open.

Veterinarians do more than vaccinate and spay/neuter dogs and cats. A veterinarian was also an astronaut and flew several missions to the International Space Station. A veterinary pathologist at the Bronx Zoo was the first person to identify West Nile Virus in the United States.

1. In the United States, admission to veterinary medical school is more competitive than admission to medical school.

2. Veterinarians can specialize in over 20 different fields, from internal medicine to pathology.

3. Most veterinarians work more than a standard 40-hour work week; 50 hours per week is about average in the United States.

4. Veterinarians are typically small business owners as well as medical professionals.

5. Veterinarians overall have a lower loan default rate than many other professionals, including physicians.

6. Although there are more pet cats in the United States than pet dogs, there are more examinations performed on pet dogs than pet cats.

7. Veterinarians are trained to do anything from artifically inseminate a dairy herd to performing a necropsy on a bearded lizard, but most self-limit their practice to a few species they are the most comfortable with.

8. Although there are veterinarians working in almost every zoo in the country, there is no dedicated specialty for zoologic medicine - most zoo vets have advanced training in large animal medicine, internal medicine or surgery.

9. The single worst phrase a veterinarian can hear is "Hey Doc, while you're here ..... ". This is usually the prelude to another hour of work that wasn't scheduled and will throw the whole day's appointments off.

10. Although veterinarians treat more species, work equal or longer hours and have the same amount of time in school, their salaries are often a third or less compared to human physicians.

Veterinary school is harder to get into than medical school. Vets have to deal with the public and many different animals. They can only treat non-human persons.
