Dystopia stories are fictional narratives set in a society characterized by oppression, inequality, and often a totalitarian government. These stories often explore themes of fear, surveillance, and the loss of individual freedoms. Dystopian fiction serves as a warning about the potential consequences of current societal trends.

Dystopian fiction is generally fiction about a world that is attempting to be perfect but contains a fatal flaw. It's the opposite of a utopia. This can take the form of a fascist government, a failing environment, corporate rule - anything. In it, life is miserable and people have to strive to rise above.

Some good examples are Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 1984 by George Orwell, the Sprawl trilogy by William Gibson, or The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Dystopian literature is the opposite of utopian literature. It is a incredibly unperfect world, where usually the government is controlling every decision of the general public. A modern example could be an extreme form of communism where everyone goes along with it. (In these books the protagonist is usually going against the government instead of going along with everyone else).

Thomas More wrote a novel in 1516 called Utopia which gave his idea of a perfect society. Since then other authors have offered their personal ideas of what 'the perfect society' might be like. This is utopian fiction.

Many great novels have been written to the opposite effect - showing what the worst society might be like or showing us what might happen to society if it keeps making the same mistakes. These are called dystopian fictions.

They are most often set in the future. This is usually because they are warnings, rather than predictions.

Dystopian fiction is a genre of literature that is set in a futuristic time. The society and it's people are regulated and seemingly "perfect". It is an attempt of the governing force's to create a utopia [paradise] for themselves and the people they rule.

Personal Note:

If you're looking to begin writing in a dystopian setting, I suggest that you consider reading one or more of these books to get a feel for it first:

1) The Hunger Games

2) Divergent

3) Dearly, Departed

4) Incarceron

A dystopia is a world that is imperfect. A dystopian world is unpleasant and is typically either under the control of a totalitarian government or has experienced a mass environmental disaster.

In dystopian literature, we usually find a world where the population is massively controlled by the government or a power of some sort (military, etc) in everything they can and can't do. We may also find a world which is almost post-apocalyptic or is post-apocalyptic, for example there might have been a nuclear war with very few survivors.

Many people consider dystopian literature as a sub-genre of Science Fiction. However some others believe it is a separate genre in its own right, as many dystopian books are not set in a science-fiction environment.

In other words, a dystopia is the opposite of a utopia.
