Best Answer

The egg and sperm is deposited into the water. The fertilized egg then becomes a free swimming larva, which then developes a shell in several months. It eats particles of the water and spits out sand that was also "eaten".

It is hard to determine a clam's lifespan because they vary greatly between type of clam and living condition. The oldest species of clam is the quahog clam which can live to be more than 400 years old. The typical lifespan for a clam is between 5 and 20 years.

How can you identify a clams sex?

Clams can be either male, female or both (hermaphroditic) depending on what stage it is on during its life cycle. For example, the hard clam (quahog) begins its life cycle as a male, then later on may become a female. The various kinds of cockles found around the world are all hermaphroditic as adults. There is no way to really tell a male from a female clam. Fortunately, either sex tastes equally good, which for most people is probably all that matters in this regard.
