Yes, a lightning bug, or as we call it in Tennessee, a fire fly, is a beetle, like a lady bug, which is also a beetle.

They are in different families, but in the same order (beetles, Coleoptera). Lady beetles (or lady bugs, if you wish) are in the Coccinellidae family and lightning bugs are in the Lampyridae family.

Technically, no. Bugs are specific types of insects. E.g., butterflies are insects, but not bugs. Lightning 'bugs' are beetles.

Actually I'm pretty sure they are. The word bug, by definition is any insect or insectlike invertebrate -www.dictionary.refrence.com

Actually what dictionary.reference.com said was that was a "loose" meaning, which would include many species that are not even insects. … Which is why I said "technically". They are bugs in an informal usage sense only. You will not see lightning "bugs" referred to as bugs in any entomology text.
