First and foremost, animals help people by being pets. Pets enrich our lives with unconditional love and companionship, often taking the place of children in childless homes or where the children have grown and "flown the nest." Pet ownership combats loneliness in those who live alone and encourage exercise in busy people who might otherwise skip that evening walk.
Along the same lines, certified therapy animals can bring a few of these benefits to the bedridden and institutionalized with pet therapy visits. Organizations like the Delta Society and Therapy Dogs International test, certify and insure teams consisting of one or more humans and a pet (usually, but not always a dog). These specially trained and socialized teams are then invited into nursing homes, hospitals, schools and other settings such as during the 9/11 tragedy to offer their special kind of emotional support and companionship to those in need who don't have pets of their own.

For at least 8,000 years, cattle and their brethren have been beasts of burden and a food source for man.
For at least 4,000 years, and possibly as many as 6,000 years, horses have served man as beasts of burden and transportation. Those cultures that had and used horses for transportation advanced much more quickly than those without. According to an inscription at The Horse Park in Lexington Kentucky, "History was written on the back of the horse."
Pilot Fish: help sharks and other large marine animals by cleaning/eating parasites, and left over 'food' from the animal's teeth.
In return, the larger animal will share it's food with the Pilot Fish when it does find food.

A close relationship like this, with mutual benefits, is called "symbiotic". It need not just be animals-only. Coral polyps feed partly on sugars exuded by algae growing on the coral's exoskeleton - the reef-building part which gives the algae sheltered anchorages.
