Radio amateurs have passed an exam entitling them to get a license and call sign so they can communicate with each other using radio. They use radio transmitters and receivers to do this. Often this radio equipment is combined in one box called a transceiver. Using the longer wavelengths, worldwide communication is sometimes possible. Wavelengths shorter than 10 metres are mostly limited to "line of sight" although longer distances are sometimes possible. Amateurs have successfully communicated by bouncing signals off the moon. Other amateurs maintain emergency networks for use in disaster situations. Japanese radio amateurs provided emergency radio communication after the earthquake and tsunami destroyed the normal infrastructure. Anyone can be a "short wave listener" and no transmitting license is needed. To do this, you need a general coverage receiver. These radios have more features and receive more frequencies than normal household radios.
