Acronyms are shortened versions of a word, such as:

N.A.S.A (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)

U.S.A (United States of America)

U.N (United Nations)

An acronym is a word formed from initials. For example, "NASA" is an acronym for "National Aeronautics and Space Administration." Typically, an acronym consists of the first letter of most words. "And, of, the, for" are just some of the words that are not used in an acronym. Usually, the words used are capitalized. In some situations, maybe when you have one word in the name of something, you might use parts of that word. For example, my science teacher came up with the acronym "MIB," which stands for "Benthic Macroinvertebrate." Forget the "benthic" part, because "macroinvertebrate" is one word, you would use multiple letters from that word.
