There are two nations that border the US, which are Canada on the north and Mexico on the south. Because these countries can conduct business by inexpensive land routes, rather than by shipping, they both do a lot of business with the US. Mexico has a larger population than Canada, but Canada has a larger economy. Canada is also an English (as well as French) speaking country, which makes it easy to do business. Canada is rich in natural resources and exports oil, lumber, nickel, etc. to the US.
Which trade relationship?
For a trade relationship to benefit Canada we would have to have an increase in the value of our exports and equal access to the other market.
Canada's inter-provincial trade relationships do not meet that standard. It seems like it should be easy to trade between provinces but each province has it's own rules. The rules are designed to keep out other provinces.
The best example is Quebec. They have many road blocks to Canadian companies.
International trade relationships are seriously flawed. Our largest trade agreement is with the USA and Mexico. We are not allowed equal access to either market but are required to supply Natural Resources at cut rate prices. While they are allowed to keep out Canadian companies with Buy American policies and many other restrictions we must sell them our resources at the same price we sell them to ourselves.
There is no better example than Soft Wood lumber dispute. While the claim was unfair logging practice the USA only attacked our lumber industry and demanded that we increase the export of raw logs to fuel their own industry.
Since this was mostly a Western Canadian issue, Canada ignored it and allowed the pillage of our forests and decimation of our lumber industry.
That is an example of the trade relationship not benefiting Canada.
An example of a relationship that helps is one where Canada receives as many jobs and benefits as it gives.
Canada's benefits is that they can get waht Canada has to offer and Canada has what Italy has to offer
