There are five types of schizophrenia: paranoid, disorganized, catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual. Paranoid schizophrenia is mostly positive symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. Disorganized schizophrenia consists mostly of inappropriate emotion and disorganized speech and behavior. Catatonic schizophrenia is where someone has strange motion, including being perfectly still or moving a lot. Undifferentiated schizophrenia is a type of schizophrenia that does not have enough symptoms of one specific type of schizophrenia for a diagnosis of one type, but instead has symptoms of multiple types of schizophrenia. Residual schizophrenia is schizophrenia with no positive symptoms that happens after a psychotic episode.

You may be talking about either "What are the three categories of schizophrenic symptoms?" or "What are the three types of schizophrenia?".

There is no model I'm aware of that has only three types of schizophrenia. However, many people divide the symptoms into three types: cognitive (for example, memory problems), positive (for example, delusions and hallucinations) and negative (for example, flat affect).

There are five subtypes of schizophrenia:

  • Paranoid: associated with hallucinations, usually auditory, and delusions, usually of gradeur or persecution
  • Disorganized: associated with marked disruptions in speech and behaviour where the patient may seem unusually self-absorbed
  • Catatonic: associated with either voluntary immobility/stupor, or excessive movement that is usually purposeless and not influenced by external stimuli; or bizarre posturing or prominent grimacing; possibly also echolalia
  • Undifferentiated: symptoms do not fit in with any of the abovementioned types
  • Residual: no longer manifesting any major symptoms after at least one episode of schizophrenia

Actually there are five types of schizophrenia.

All types share some of the same symptoms, but the different types are distinguished from each other on account of one or more unique symptoms.

Paranoid - Patients with paranoid schizophrenia experience symptoms of... well, paranoia. They think that people are out to get them, that sort of thing.

Catatonic - Catatonic Schizophrenia is a movement-based type of schizophrenia. People with CS might make themselves completely immobile, or they'll move erratically and irregularly. It's particularly dangerous because it impairs people to take care of themselves.

Disorganized - People with Disorganized Schizophrenia exhibit speech and behavior that is disorganized and difficult understand. They might do things like laugh completely out of context or do something/say something that doesn't relate at all to the action they are performing. I'd say that this is probably one of the most difficult variations to handle just because it's very disruptive and... annoying.

Undifferentiated - Undifferentiated Schizophrenia is a type of schizophrenia wherein there aren't really any symptoms that stand out enough to differentiate it into one of the other aforementioned types of schizophrenia.

Residual - Some people may not recognize this as one of the types of schizophrenia, but I do. Point is, if you don't think this one can clarify as a type of schizophrenia then there's only four types. Anyway, residual schizophrenia is characterized by people who experience symptoms of schizophrenia after already having been successfully treated. In simple terms, a person has schizophrenia. Then they get treated. If symptoms start coming back, then it's classified as residual schizophrenia.

There is no specific type of schizophrenia that is associated with self-harm. Self-harm in schizophrenia is generally associated with delusions.
