Hens are birds.

Most (but not all) reptiles, amphibians and fish lay eggs.

In addition, there are two types of egg-laying mammals, known as monotremes. The platypus and the echidna are monotremes.

What special type of egg do reptiles have?

Reptile eggs are soft-shelled so that the babies can break out of the shells. Bird eggs are hard-shelled, because baby birds use their beaks to crack the shells of their eggs, but since reptiles don't have beaks to use to break their shells, their eggs have to be soft-shelled.

Why are some animals born in eggs?

SOme animals are born in eggs usually for protection. It is because if they were born without eggs, they would not be able to survive. SOmetimes it is because they hatch under water or in the sand.

Why are not all animals oviparous?

Oviparous animals are animals that reproduce by laying eggs. This is how most fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and arachnids reproduce. All birds and monotremes also reproduce like this. Most animals that live on land lay eggs that are protected by hard shells. They fertilize their eggs internally. Water-dwelling animals like fish and amphibians lay eggs that have not been fertilized yet. Then the males lay sperm on top of the eggs, which is called external fertilization. No mammals except for monotremes reproduce like this. Instead, they are viviparous. Fish, amphibians and reptiles that are not oviparous are oviviparous. This means that the eggs hatch while still inside the mother's body.
