Kangaroos are a marsupial mammal and have evolved over the past 25 million years. No other examples of their present line of evolution exist.

The earliest kangaroos moved on all four legs, could climb trees and came equipped with teeth for eating meat like modern dogs. With changing climate they adapted to a plant based diet.

The original kangaroos had two meat eating types one of which one of which had teeth as big as wolves. The othere could gallop o all fours to capture prey.

With regard to their present leg stucture which allows the characteristic leaps, this was a modification from some 10 to 15 million years ago. The change to grasslands made climbing trees a less satisfactory activity (even though tre kangaroos do exhibit the ability) and made the need to escape rapidly a survival trait.
