Coral Sea-History's first clash of aircraft carriers. USN strategic victory; IJN tactical victory. Midway-USN's first decisive naval (battle) victory of WWII. Midway was also an aircraft carrier engagement; although submarines participated in the fight, sinking the destroyer USS Hammon and administering the coup de grace to the USS Yorktown.
Most would say it was the "Battle of Midway." We lost the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, But the Japanese lost 3 aircraft carriers and the 4th was badly damaged and eventually sunk.
May 1942, the "Battle of the Coral Sea" was the FIRST clash of carriers. The largest US Aircraft Carrier, the 888 foot long USS Lexington was lost in the battle. The Japanese lost one light carrier. Coral Sea was a "Tactical" victory for the Imperial Navy as they sunk the largest vessel. The battle was a "Strategic" victory for the US Navy, as they had stopped Japan from extending southward.
Tactical victory for IJN: Sunk USS Lexington, one of two of the largest aircraft carriers in the USN. Plus the destroyer USS Sims and an oiler. IJN lost one light carrier. Strategic victory for USN: IJN aborted mission.
The Battle of the Coral Sea was a Japanese tactical victory; they sank the US Navy's largest aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington. The Battle of the Coral Sea was a US strategic victory; because the Japanese turned around, and headed away from Australia. President Lincoln.
The Battle of the Coral Sea, May 4 to 8 1942, carrier based aircraft engaged each other as well as attacking the ships.
Midway, June 4, 1942. There were four great carrier battles in 1942 but Midway was the most clear-cut US victory. There was not another major carrier battle until June 1944, which was another US lopsided victory, often called the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot". This latter battle basically finished Japanese naval air power, though the US did not realize it. The Japanese still had a few carriers but all their experienced pilots were dead.
Lincoln greatest victory was his election as President followed by his re-election.
