Unless you are awarded SS Disability or a similar award, the qualifying retirement age is graduated depending on when you were born. Contact your local SS office for further information.

If you have accumulated enough work credits (typically 40) the earliest you can collect Social Security retirement benefits is 62. At that age, your monthly payment would be about 75% of the amount you would receive by waiting to retire at SSA's full retirement age.

Full retirement age:

  • Born before 1943...................65
  • Born between 1943-1954........66
  • Born in 1955.........................66 + 2 months
  • Born in 1956.........................66 + 4 months
  • Born in 1957.........................66 + 6 months
  • Born in 1958.........................66 + 8 months
  • Born in 1959.........................66 + 10 months
  • Born in 1960 or later...............67

You can receive Social Security disability benefits at any age if you have sufficient work credits (on your own or a spouse's work record, or on a parent's work record if disabled before age 22) and SSA determines your condition prevents you from engaging in Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).

The earliest you can collect Social Security retirement benefits is age 62. You would be entitled to approximately 75% of the amount you would receive if you waited until full retirement age (66) to retire. This amount will not increase when you reach full retirement age, so there is a penalty for filing early.

The SSA does not make partial payments except when making adjustments to offset windfalls, other government pension checks, or excessive early retirement earnings. If you file for retirement benefits at age 62, they will pay the full monthly amount to which you're entitled.

No. There really is no such thing as "unused" benefits. If a person pays FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes but dies before he or she can collect benefits, his or her widow or widower and minor children, or adult children disabled before age 22 (if applicable) can collect monthly checks for survivors' benefits. Able-bodied adult children or those who became disabled after age 22 cannot collect benefits from their mother's Social Security (FICA) contributions. The unpaid amount remains in the Social Security trust fund.
