You should be prepared for aftershocks

  • Quickly escape the building you're in if you haven't done so already and if it doesn't look sturdy enough to stay up
  • Stay away from downed power lines because they might electrify you
  • DO NOT DRIVE. There might have been damage to the roads.
  • If you're not with family members or friends, try to send text messages to them or wait at the spot you had planned to meet up with them
  • Stay prepared for aftershocks. If the earthquake was huge, then it could be followed by big aftershocks.
  • Stay away from falling debris during an aftershock.
  • Stay in a cleared area where it's less likely you'll get hit by poles, street lights, power lines, and trees

I'm trying to stay calm while I'm writing this for your benefit and I know I'll follow my own advice as well, because where I live--Long Beach, California--we just had a 3.7 earthquake on November 5th, 2010, and it scared the daylights out of me. I was near the epicenter. I was in my school and it shook pretty hard where I was. So stay safe during an earthquake. You never know when it might happen.

Stay still and count to 20, slowly, to make sure of no aftershocks. then be very careful when coming out. If you can, stay in your house, so as to not block the roads. IUf the roads are blocked, emergency services can't get to people. Hope this helped!

Check your gas if it has a crack or damage.Small damage might cause a huge fire.

Check the water if it comes out normally.if not,call you state water service or repair.

See if any crack on house or building outside or inside.if crack call repair and get out of the building.

And check your power if not normal or weak,call power station and say its an emergency.

Don't panic and stay calm! And be careful just in case

Depending how big it is. Start securing things and if there is an aftershock, get outside/ under a table.

an aftershock
a power cut happens
Tsunamis, aftershocks, and fires may occur.
After earthquakes there are often aftershocks which are like mini earthquakes - at least not as bad as the original quake. Rescue teams are put into action if people are missing and rubble is cleared away. If the damage is really bad, people are evacuated to a safer place or often flee the country to stay with friends or family somewhere else. Gradually, buildings that are severely damaged are bulldozed and often rebuilt.

I hope this helped you, sorry if it isn't what you were looking for.

Be wary of buildings and structures. They might be damaged and on the point of collapsing. Water pipes, both freshwater and sewage might have ruptured. Try to make sure your drinking water is safe. Boil it or purify it unless you can drink water collected before the quake. Gas lines and electrical installations might be damaged enough to be fire hazards. Or electrocution, or gas poisoning.

Looting can happen. be ready to defend yourself, or preferably - hide.

Check yourself and others for injuries.

Look for any small fires and put those out.

Clean up any spilled flammable liquids.

DO NOT turn off your gas valve unless you suspect there's a leak. It may be harmful to turn it back on yourself.

If opening any closets or doors, open slowly. Objects may fall.

Check for structural damage. If there is any, GET OUT IMMEDIATELY. The aftershocks may cause further damage which can be detrimental if anyone is inside.

Be aware of animal behavior. They can become aggressive and attack.

WEAR STURDY SHOES to avoid injury from broken glass and debris. Expect aftershocks

CHECK FOR INJURIES (if a person is bleeding, put direct pressure on the wound, use clean gauze or cloth if available; If a person is not breathing administer CPR; DO NOT attempt to move seriously injured persons unless they are in further danger of injury; COVER injured persons with blankets to keep warm; SEEK medical help for serious injuries

CHECK FOR HAZARDS (Fire hazards--put out fires in your home or neighborhood immediately, call for help; Gas leaks--shut off main gas valve ONLY if you suspect a leak because of broken pipes or odor; Damaged electrical wiring--Shut off power at the control box if there is any danger to house wiring; Downed or damaged utility lines--do not touch downed power lines or any objects in contact with them;

SPILLS--clean up any spilled medicines, drugs, or other harmful materials such as bleach, lye, gas;

DOWNED OR DAMAGED CHIMNEYS--Approach with caution--don't use damaged chimney (it could start fire or let poisonous gases into your house;

FALLEN ITEMS--beware of items tumbling off shelves when you open doors of closets and cupboards;

CHECK FOOD AND WATER SUPPLIES--Do not eat or drink anything from open containers near shattered glass; If power is off, plan meals to use up foods that will spoil quickly or frozen foods (food in the freezer should be good for at least a couple of days; Don't light your kitchen stove if you suspect a gas leak;

USE BBQ or camp stoves, outdoors only for emergency cooking; If your water is off you can drink supplies from water heaters, melted ice cubes or canned vegetables (AVOID drinking water from swimming pools or especially spas--it may have too many chemicals in it to be safe.)

You will need;

Food, water, Shelter, appropriate clothing for the environment both for day and night. An FM radio to listen to Emergancy Transmissions, something to create heat for cooking
