Which state in the US has the most lawyers?

The District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) has the most lawyers per capita, but D.C. isn't exactly a state. New York is the state with the most lawyers per capita. My source is http://www.averyindex.com/lawyers_per_capita.php Here are the top 3 on the list: 1. D.C. with 276.7 per 10,000 residents. 2. New York: 20.4 per 10,000. 3. Delaware: 18.4 per 10,000. Though the answer to this question may be right, the supporting data I believe is wrong. I have seen this info provided by the Avery Index and it does not reconcile with the information provided by the ABA at: http://www.abanet.org/marketresearch/2005nbroflawyersbystate.pdf. So take Massachusetts for instance. The Avery Index reports 14.5 lawyers per 10,000 people. Since the population of MA is approximately 6.5 Million that would mean there should be about 9,425 lawyers in MA (6,500,000 / 10,000) * 14.5. But the ABA says there are about 49,000 lawyers in MA or about 5 times more than the Avery Index says which would put the number of lawyers per 10,000 people number at about 75 not 14.5. As I said, the correct answer still looks to be New York but to be sure the ABA numbers need to be checked against the population of each state.
