The first self-propelled car was a steam powered vehicle built in 1769, by Nicolas Cugnot, a French military engineer

In 1807 Issac De Rivas of Switzerland built the first car to run on an internal combustion engine. The engine was gas driven and used a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen to operate.

In 1862 Jean Lenoir of Belgium built a car powered by the first commercially successful 2 cycle internal combustion engine which he designed. It moved the car along at almost 2 miles per hour.

In 1876 the first commercially 4 cycle engine was developed by the Otto and Langen Company of Deutz, Germany. By Sassygurl10!
