I read an article in a swimming magazine before that in the time of kings, queens, and knights, to become a knight you had to jump in a large lake with all of your armor on and swim (freestyle or however you could get across) to the other side.

If you believe that you will believe anything !
most probably in eerrmm...

water.

Drawings from the Stone Age were found in "the cave of swimmers" near Sura, dating back to 2000 B.C. There is evidence that swimming was also a very popular sport in Greece and Italy in the original Olympic Games. In 1538, Nicolas Wynman, German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book. Competitive swimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly using breaststroke. The front crawl, then called the trudgen (now known predominantly as the "front crawl" or "freestyle") was introduced in 1873 by John Arthur Trudgen, copying it from Native Americans. Swimming was part of the first modern 1896 Olympic Games in Athens. In 1900, Backstroke was included as an Olympic Event. In 1908the world swimming association Federation Internationale de Natation was formed. Butterfly was first a variant of breaststroke, until it was accepted as a separate style in the 1952 Olympics. At present, there are the four recognized strokes of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle; while the IM ("Individual Medley") is a combination of all four of the strokes in a specific order. Butterfly is done first, followed by backstroke, breaststroke, and then finishing with freestyle. Freestyle is where you can swim any stroke you want. During a freestyle event any swimmer chose to do another stroke. in Athens. In 1900, Backstroke was included as an Olympic Event. Swimming has been around since the caveman days concluded by evidence of pictures drawn on cave walls. Competitive swimming appeared at the first modern Olympics in 1896 in Athens but started in the earlier 1800's.

History has not recorded the first person who swam. It could be assumed that folks came up with swimming thousands of years ago when they needed to get from one side of a pond, lake, stream, etc., to another and the boat or raft had not yet been invented.

In this essay I will explain where swimming originated, who or what group of people got it started, and when did swimming become competitive, some swimming safety rules, some interesting swimming facts, and I Will teach you a stroke.

First, where did swimming originate? Some people say that the early English created it, some think that the people of Australia created it. Actually, the English were the first early modern civilization to start swimming. The origins of swimming started in Egypt hieroglyphics reflect the images of people swimming. Later on Romans, and the Japanese started to jump off cliffs!

As a matter of fact the Japanese Emperor Suigiu, started swimming as a competitve sport! In Rome and Greece the Romans considered swimming a very great sport, yet it wasn't included in the Olympics that they held.

Strokes developed slowly, and countries are known for their grandness in a specific stroke. Europeans were vastly known for their breaststroke, as well and people in North America were known for the crawler. Frederick Cavill was the first person to create a swimming pool. He was also stunned by the way the Indians used the under stroke for speed to catch their prey. Then the sport was truned around, it was now more speed than endurance. And he also noticed the kicking action used by the Indians, thus creating more speed! Indians were great people to study, they also learned new strokes, this made the sons of Frederick famous by diving into the record books.

Hi.

The first recorded swimming races were held in Japan in 36 B.C. However, ancient drawings and paintings depicting people swimming date back to 2500 A.D. in Egypt. Also, the first swimming event in the Olympics did not happen until 1896. Depending on what you are looking for swimming has a somewhat scattered history.

I hope that helped.

Thanks,
