The definition of what is a "liberal" or a "conservative" varies through time, and it is not set even in modern times.

In terms of the politics of his time, FDR could be described as a "liberal", since he supported some things - like setting up the National Works Administration, creating labor laws that recognised unions, and setting up Social Security - that conservatives opposed. But that does not mean he would qualify as a liberal in modern times. He opposed the abolition of segregation, for example, which in modern times is supported by liberals.

In addition to being opposed by many conservatives, FDR was also opposed by many people on the left wing who felt that he was not doing enough to help the poor. The socialist and communist movements were very active during the great depression and they opposed many of Roosevelt's decisions.

FDR was liberal....Probably the first true "left-wing" presidents. This is true because of the New Deal which provided government intervention in the economy.....Not to go off on a political rant, but in truth, the New Deal worsened the depression.

  • Hoover was liberal because while he believed that the poor couldn't be helped very much by government, he felt bad watching them starve due to the economic collapse he supported.
  • other than opposed to cheering as conservatives do now.
  • After the Stock Market crash of 1929, Hoover took a hand-off attitude and assumed that American businesses would eventually recover.
  • He did not see it as the role of government to step and save business from the damage it had done to itself.
  • Conservatives like less gov intrusion, therefore he believed that American businesses would fix themselves.
