CS Lewis became a Christian at the age of 31, in 1930, when he decided he could no longer pretend that God existed because the evidence for him (God) was too great. This was after long discussions and intellectual battles with Christian and fellow writer JRR Tolkien (Lord of the Rings).

C S Lewis was an atheist until in his 30s and then he was first converted to theism (a belief in God) and then to Christianity. His main reason for his Atheism was that he could not see how a good, all-powerful God would allow evil and suffering in the world. His conversion to theism followed a close reading of Chesterton's "The Everlasting Man" and several long talks (arguments?) with his colleague J.R.R. Tolkien and another friend, Hugo Dyson. It was a process, rather than an instant experience.

He defends the Christian view of God and evil and suffering rather well (IMHO) in the book "The Problem of Pain" and I recommend it to you if you are at all interested in this topic.
