Barabbas was in prison for committing robbery and murder, but was set free by Pilate, at the demand of the people, instead of Jesus. It was customary for a prisoner of the people's choice to be released at Passover. That is all that is known about Barabbas.

"I killed those soldiers because I had duty to Israel"

-Stacy Keach as Barabbas in the Jesus Of Nazareth filmHe was Jewish man in The Bible who wanted to kill the Roman soldiers. He went to Jesus to get His seal of approval, but to much of his surprise, Jesus told him to love his enemies. Then he became selfish and forgot what Jesus told him and led daring raids against Roman military. Soon after he was captured and thrown in prison. Months later when Pontius Pilate wanted to release Jesus, the Pharisees demanded that he release Barabbas. Pilate was hesitant knowing that Barabbas was an enemy of Rome but after the people of Jerusalem demanded him to kill Jesus, he released Barabbas and crucified Jesus. It is not known whether he became a Christian neither is it known whether he witnessed Jesus' resurrection or ascension.

'Barabbas' is not a proper or surname, -it is what this particular man was called.

'Barabbas' is an Aramaic appellation, -the meaning of which is: Bar = Son + ABBA = Father (as in 'the Father of us all' or, 'God', if you will).

So, unbeknown to you, the question really is: 'Was (the) Son of God good'?

I would hope that the answer is 'yes'.

His 'name' was actually "Jesus", -written in the original Greek Gospel according or attributed to Matthew (27:17) but that His name was omitted from the Latin translation (around 390 c. e.) and most of the subsequent translations thereafter... leaving us (latter-day people) with only 'Barabbas' instead.

A:In the crucifixion story, the Jews were asked to choose between Jesus, the Son of the Father, and Barabbas, whose name also means, in Hebrew, Son of the Father. They chose to release Barabbas and to crucify Jesus.

John Shelby Spong (Jesus for the NonReligious) says that in his research, Spong has been able to find no evidence that there was a custom of releasing a prisoner at the time of the Passover. He says the original crucifixion story could have been related to a Jewish tradition at Yom Kippur. One lamb or goat was killed for our sins and one had the sins of the people symbolically transferred to him, after which he was chased away. Mark simply transferred the imagery from the Yom Kippur festival and applied it to the trial of Jesus. in the Passover season.

On Shelby's reading, supported by others such as MacDonald, Jesus and Barabbas represented the two sheep of the Jewish tradition, one of which must be released and the other must be sacrificed. The significance is that by releasing Barabbas, the Jews chose the wrong 'scapegoat'.

Jesus Barabbas was spared from cruxifiction when the crowd chose instead to kill Jesus of Nazareth. It is often questioned whether this Jesus existed since he is only mentioned in a few gospels.
