Yes, he was, but not right away. He spent the first decade or so of his career as just another working musician. When he was in his mid-30s, though, his music attracted the attention of Brahms, who helped him get a good publisher and opened other doors for him. His Stabat Mater, concertos, and some of his symphonies became popular very quickly, and he traveled to London several times to conduct his works. He received an honorary degree from Cambridge. He was (and is) a favorite son among the Czechs. During the early 1890s he was recruited to organize the American Conservatory, a short-lived but influential music school in New York.
