The Valkyries, otherwise known as Valkyrs were Odins handmaidens in the great hall of Valhalla. They had other duties, such as seeing to the needs of the Einheriar (Chosen slain) but for their primary role, Odin would send them out to watch over the battles of men and select those from the dead who had fought courageously. Once selected the mens spirits would be transported (by the Valkyrs) to Valhalla, a vast hall in Asgard where they would endlessly drink and feast and fight one anther for sport. Here they would await the final battle between the Aesir and the Frost Giants, called Ragnarok. When the battle came they were led to it by Odin himself, who was also known as the father of the slain, or "Valfather".

Both women and men went to Valhalla as long as they died in battle. However, an especially adept Viking woman would be inducted into the land of the Valkyries if she was deemed fit to be among their ranks.
