That depends on the levels, however with high levels of chlorine when the sun is shining, it can burn the skin. There would have to be extreme elevated levels for that to occur, but it is possible. The real problem would be getting it in your eyes. It's best to stay out of it, until levels have returned to normal range.

Swimming in a pool with a high chlorine concentration can result in serious damage to the skin, eyes, and other parts of the body. The chlorine in a pool should be regulated and monitored on a regular basis.

Yes, but once you achieve 10 ppm and above your skin, hair, and eyes will not appreciate this level and I, personally, wouldn't want very young children in that water. Your hair may need a chlorine removing shampoo. I've accidently had that happen before.

Hi this is Bill Soukup with Commercial Pools. It depends on what you consider high chlorine levels to be. Most pools, commercial and residential should run a minimum of 2 PPM to control giardia and E coli. Most commercial pools should run chlorine levels 3 to 5 PPM on a regular basis. Residential pools can run just under these levels. At about 5 PPM you might start ruining some of your equipment, especially your copper heat exchanger. At about 10 PPM you will ruin swim suits. Cheap swim suits might get ruined well under 10 PPM. It wouldn't make sense to swim in a pool with the chlorine level over 10 PPM. With this said, you would have to be well over that for any physical dangers.

Does it cost more to run higher chlorine levels? I don't think so. Actually our customers who run low levels spend more because they have to purchase extra chemicals such as clarifiers, algaecides, etc. Our company believes that you use about the same amount of chlorine per month at 2 PPM as you would with 5 PPM. We don't see any change in our customer's monthly orders.

The NSPF states that between 1-3 ppm of chlorine is safe to swim in. Through my own studies, I actually recommend 4ppm as a standard. Especially in public pools or soft-sided above ground pools that lack proper circulation given the inferior, small cartridge filters. There are many ways around this. You can use a mineral purifier that uses both copper and silver. The silver acts as a supplement to where you can use as little as .5 PPM of chlorine and do just fine. The copper acts as an algae preventative.

Though there are more simple ways to go. Natural Chemistry makes a product called "Pool Perfect Plus Phos free" If you use this product on a weekly basis you can get away with using far less chlorine.

Algae requires three main ingredients to grow.

1. Sunlight, (good luck keeping your pool in the dark all the time).

2. Water (this should be pretty self evident)

3. Phosphates (this is actually a controllable facet)

If you remove all the Phosphates from a pool, algae cannot grow.

You then need to look at the effectiveness of the chlorine itself.

pH is a huge factor in chlorine effectiveness.

pH is a scale created by S.R.L Sorenson in 1909 to determine the corrosive ability of free standing liquid per liter.

It is based on a negative integer quantity of equivalent grams of Hydrogen.

If a liter of solution has .0000001 equivalent grams of hydrogen it then has a pH of 7.0 which is neutral.

Chlorine works more efficiently the lower the pH. Preferably between 7.2 and 7.8.

Any higher the chlorine loses its capability as a sanitizer on an exponential level. Any lower the chlorine is literally burned off by the acidity.

The pH of the human skin and eyes is most comfortable at 7.5 for those seeking pool perfection.

Can regular swimming cause hair fall due to chlorine..what are the safe levels for chlorine in pools?

You can check the pool chlorine levels with some litmus paper the levels need to be between 7.2 and 7.6 on the ph scale it would need a lot of chlorine for hair to fall out Safe levels are below 5ppm chlorine. You won't die if you swim in 10 ppm once or twice, but there could be harmful effects if you swim very regularly in high doses.

we have a quick set 16x42 pool, my chlorine remains low?

You can buy a testing kit and test your water to see if there are any abnormal bacteria in your water that would be keeping the chlorine levels low. Otherwise, just add chlorine daily to keep your pool safe for swimming.

What is a safe chlorine for swimming?

Someone/something changed the original question and that is probably why it has not been answered.Safe levels for chlorine are 1.5 ppm to about 5.0 ppm. of free chlorine. You should have a test kit that will give you free chlorine readings as opposed to just a chlorine residual. Free chlorine is what sanitizes the pool water. If you can smell a chlorine odor coming from your pool then you do not have enough chlorine in the water.K

What can neutralize chlorine in a swimming pool?

Sodium thiosulfate. You can purchase at pool stores. If for the purpose of draining the pool water to the streets or sewer system you need to neutralize the chlorine or just let it drop on it's own to those levels needed. If on the other hand you have in access of 10.0 ppm chlorine then wait a few days for those levels to drop at their own rate. Otherwise, the water is safe even at 10.0 ppm. to swim in.

How do you ensure pool is safe if feces are found in pool?

Remove the feces to the best of your ability. Make sure chlorine levels are where they are supposed to be - 10 ppm for this "accident". Is it safe to swim in a pool that use chlorine tabs only The pH levels are never checked etc.?

If the water stays clear that is generally a pretty good indicator that it fairly safe if you are keeping the chlorine up to it. It would not do any harm however to take a sample of the water to a pool shop once in awhile to see how the chemical balance of the water is going. They do these tests for free.
