Texas was formally and unanimously declared independent from Mexico on March 2, 1836. This declaration was made at Washington in the general convention by the Delegates of the People of Texas. The capture of Santa Anna on March 6, 1836, in the Battle of the Alamo, sealed the Independence of Texas, though the declaration was made a few days before.
The Second Continental Congress adopted the U.S. Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It met from May 1775 to March 1781 and served as the de facto national government of the American colonies during the Revolutionary War.

Thomas McKean (March 19, 1734 - June 24, 1817) was a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Delaware. Although born in Pennsylvania, he studied law in Delaware and practiced there and in New Jersey, as well as in Pennsylvania. He represented Delaware in the Second Continental Congress, where he voted for Independence and signed the Declaration. He went on to both military and political service.
