The stake in the showdown in North America between the British and the French in North America was the possession of the Ohio River Valley, and the profitable resources and trade opportunities there. Ultimately, it would decide which country would hold hegemony over North America.

Why did the british and their American colonial subjects win the contest with the french for control of north America?

== == In the end it really turned out to be shear force. The British had a much higher population than the French. This is because of the exculsivity of the French colonies compared to the open English colonies. The English colonies were set up for religious freedom, being a newly protestant nation, this meant alot to them. The French however were much more selective of their colonists. They only wanted Catholics. Not only that but upstanding Catholics. This resulted in fewer numbers for the French, but huge numbers for the Brits. Another factor was the treatment of the natives on both sides. The French were much more respective of the natives than the British were. British conquered and enslaved a good portion of the aboriginal population, while the French worked together with the natives, especially regarding the fur trade. This does not attribute to British success, but it does explain how the French did as well as they did. They had many aboriginal allies who could assist them in their battles. There were other factors, but these were a couple of the main ones.
