The Phoenicians developed an alphabet developing the first written language to record their trades. It is disputed that they invented the alphabet but they did spread it's use throughout the civilized area they traded in. Other people such as the Greeks took this alphabet and improved it for further use. The widespread area where the Phoenicians traveled gives them credit for invention of the first alphabet. They traded everywhere that there were people they could trade with.
