According to the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing in an article by Kathleen T. Lucke, "lung diseases and breathing complications cause significant illness in patients following spinal cord injuries. The mortality rate from pulmonary complications, such as pneumonia, lung collapse, respiratory failure, and infections, can be 40-80% in the first year after injury."

In the acute phase of recovery from spinal cord injury, the patient will need to be on a respirator if they are in a coma or otherwise unable to breathe on their own. The severity of the injury will designate when/if they will be able to discontinue use of the respirator. Long term, someone with a spinal cord injury who is unable to breath on their own may require a portable ventilator, which can attach to a wheelchair, to enable them to gain additional mobility.
