No you shouldn't, a septic tank contains live bacteria that digest the sewage. Drain cleaners, bleach and other chemicals will kill off the bacteria.

Look for products that are listed as being okay for septic tanks. For a clogged drain try a plunger or drain snake to physically remove the blockage or remove the drain and clean it by hand.

Drain cleaners are rarely useful even when they can be used.

Other septic care details include having it pumped out once a year and don't bother with adding any special enzymes or other products to help it digest. A septic tank works fine as designed without adding anything special to it or doing anything special other than don't poison it with chemicals and have it pumped out once a year.

Drain Cleaners & Septic Treatment Chemicals , such as used to unclog building drains, of all types, caustic or organic, should be OK provided that you follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Regular, daily, weekly, or monthly use of drain openers, drain cleaners should not be needed in residential septic systems and some products that are caustics may be harmful to the system and to the environment when used often or in larger-than-recommended quantities.

Septic treatment chemicals are generally not needed, sometimes contaminate the environment, and are illegal in many jurisdictions in the U.S. and all of Canada.

For general household use there are many "Green" and septic safe products available.

How to Clean a Septic Tank?

An overfilled septic tank can cause backups in a sewer line, causing many problems in a plumbing system. If a septic tank has overflowed, it is usually clogged with excessive organic debris. A septic tank cleaner can be a good first step when treating a septic tank overflow. Septic tank cleaners contain natural bacteria and enzymes, designed to break down organic material in human waste. Excessive disposal of bleach and detergents into a septic line can kill these bacteria, preventing the breakdown of septic waste in a tank. If a septic cleaner doesn't clear a tank after a week, it may be necessary to use a professional septic tank cleaning service.

How deep can a septic tank be. Is it ok to put gravel on top, or dirt Will it hurt the drain field?

Septic tanks may be installed at any depth in the soil. The main factors that determine the depth of the tank are sewer line depth, and the site conditions. It is ok to put gravel or dirt over your septic tank. If you have six or more inches of dirt you can grow grass as well.Putting gravel or dirt over the septic tank will not harm the drain field.

How does a septic tank look?

A septic tank and its accompanying drain field are both several feet underground, and so from ground level they do not "look" like anything at all. Sometimes grass is more green over a septic tank, but this is not necessarily so. Even a septic tank specialist cannot locate your tank by looking. They would need to use a special probe or a line detector.
