ADDED: There have been attempts to establish common languages, such as the artificial Esperanto, but none really made much progress. The main languages in the World now, by population but not necessarily in number order, are Chinese, various forms of Spanish, and English (mainly the US dialect).

The success of the United States is that it benefitted from the social and industrial advances of the world, not that it ignored them. The people and cultures of other nations can still teach the US much, even it is only what *not* to do. It is necessary to continually adapt to the processes that exist in the global economy.

If everyone in the world spoke the same language we would not have to worry about learning different languages to understtand people of a different culture or language. Trading industries would not have to work as hard to contact and negotiate with foriegn countries.

No because that in itself is discriminatory toward those who do not speak English. It is like saying you can't come to America unless you speak English. How can the world unite with one another if we are forcing everyone to speak one language? How can culture thrive with only one language spoken? Individual cultures can't thrive if their native languages are abolished and they are forced to speak English. It's blasphemy in my opinion. I speak English, but I value the diversity of the world and the multitude of cultures and languages. It adds this constant challenge of learning something new which is what I thrive for in life.
