How is magnet used in electric fans?

Split-ring commutators allow the direction of current to be reversed every half a cycle of revolution to allow for a continuous rotation. A carbon brush is used to allow for continuous electrical contact between circuit and the split-ring commutator (except when it reaches the gap).
