The most famous RN battleship sunk in WWII was the HMS Hood, sunk by the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941 in the Denmark Strait, one of several ships including the HMS Prince of Wales, trying to prevent the Bismarck from escaping to the open Atlantic to do damage to merchant shipping vital to the war effort. This was just prior to the famous battle in which WWI biplane torpedo planes from the carrier HMS Ark Royal disabled the Bismarck's rudder, allowing British battleship King George V and other RN ships to catch up and finally sink her.

The battleship Royal Oak, a WWI battleship, was sunk in 1939 by a German U-boat in another famous attack at the Royal Navy base at Scapa Flow. The ship was at anchor in Scapa Bay when it was attacked by the U-47. It was one of the more famous attacks of the war by the Germans as the approach is very shallow - between 70-160' deep, not much room for a submarine.

HMS Barham, sunk by U-331 November 25, 1941 in the Mediterranean.

HMS Repulse, sunk by Japanese aircraft December 10, 1941 near Singapore.

HMS Prince of Wales, sunk by Japanese aircraft December 10, 1941, near Singapore. Damaged by Bismarck in the exchange which sank the Hood.

HMS Centurion - scuttled off the Normandy beaches, June 9,1944.

Who said the Bismarck must be destroyed?

Winston Churchill gave the order to sink the BismarckThe pocket battleship set off on her maiden voyage on 19 May 1941 with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. Their mission was to sink supply convoys between the UK and the US. On 24 May 1941, they were discovered and HMS Hood, with HMS The Prince of Walles, engaged them. Only minutes into the battle the Bismarck landed what was described as a 'lucky' shot which struck the Hood's magazine. She went down in minutes with the loss of 1,415 souls of her compliment of 1,418.Upon hearing the news Churchill ordered that every resource possible be used to sink the Bismarck, who in turn was taking on water and was reduced to a max speed of 20 knots. Following three days of cat-and-mouse with the Royal Navy, her rudder was damaged by a torpedo from a Fairey Swordfish which left her at the mercy of the pursuing Royal Navy and on the morning of 27 May 1941 the Bismarck, suffered a huge bombardment which led the captain of the stricken ship to order it to be scuttled and his crew to abandon ship
